This announcement comes a few hours after Donald Trump’s departure from Beijing, where he was the last American president to be received in 2017. “We have concluded fantastic commercial agreements, excellent for both our countries,” he said, adding that he and his host had “resolved many different problems.”
Xi Jinping praised “a historic visit that will make history,” affirming that he had reached an agreement with his American counterpart to engage in a “constructive strategic stability relationship.” Despite tumultuous relations, the President of the People’s Republic of China since 2013 will therefore travel to Washington, 11 years after his last visit to the other side of the Pacific, where he met Barack Obama at the time.
