The United States has imposed sanctions on an individual and additional sanctions on two entities related to Cuba, according to a notice published on the U.S. Treasury Department’s website on Thursday.
The State Department stated that the sanctions targeted Grupo de Administracion Empresarial S.A. (GAESA), a conglomerate present in all sectors of the Cuban economy and controlled by the military; Ania Guillermina Lastres Morera, executive president of GAESA; and MNSA, Moa Nickel SA, a joint venture between the Toronto-based company Sherritt International Corp and the Cuban state nickel company.
The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump has increased pressure on Cuba this year, halting oil shipments from Venezuela, which had long been Havana’s main supplier, and threatening to intensify economic sanctions against the communist regime.
Sherritt announced on its website on Thursday that it had immediately suspended its direct participation in the joint venture in Cuba.
