“A special relationship.” This is how Winston Churchill, former British Prime Minister, described the ties between the UK and the US in 1946. An illustration took place last year at the White House when Keir Starmer delivered a letter from King Charles III to Donald Trump: “It’s an invitation for a second state visit. It’s really special because it’s unprecedented. I think it reflects the strength of our relationship.”

But for the past few months, it has not been smooth sailing. For example, in January, Keir Starmer completely dismissed the customs threat from the American president towards European countries regarding his desire to acquire Greenland.

Another point of contention is the war in Iran. After questioning the legality of the conflict, London limited Washington’s use of its bases in the Indian Ocean, which angered Donald Trump: “Keir Starmer is no Winston Churchill. The UK has been very, very uncooperative. It’s very sad to see that the relationship is evidently not what it used to be.”

Recently, the White House tenant regretted this tense diplomatic climate: “It was by far the strongest relationship, and now we have very strong relationships with other countries in Europe.” On his visit to the United States, King Charles III will try to ease tensions between London and Washington. Last year, the American president described his last visit to the country as one of the greatest honors of his life.
