Bluffs and Ultimatums: The United States, Iran, and the Tightrope Strategy

As the second round of negotiations between the United States and Iran approaches, tensions are running high. Both sides are teetering on the edge of a cliff, but they strangely believe that this path will lead to success and not disaster.

This tightrope act became even more precarious on April 21, when Donald Trump’s negotiators delayed their departure for new talks in Islamabad, Pakistan, in an effort to push the Iranians to clarify the concessions they are willing to make.

Trump then extended his ultimatum originally set for April 22 [and extended the ceasefire], so that the divided Iranian authorities can agree on a position before the US president attacks bridges, power plants, and other civilian targets in Iran.

In reality, Trump showed conciliation rather than rigidity by granting this deadline. If the Speaker of the Iranian Parliament, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, cannot comply, then the world may draw a grim conclusion and act accordingly.
