During a press briefing, Donald Trump stated that Prince Harry “does not speak on behalf of the UK” after his comments on the war in Ukraine. On Thursday, April 23, the former member of the British royal family called on the United States to “show leadership.”
Donald Trump was not pleased with Prince Harry’s comments about the role of the United States in the war in Ukraine. During a press interview on Thursday, he responded to the prince’s statements during his trip to Ukraine. “I think I speak more on behalf of the UK than Prince Harry,” the American president confidently stated.
Harry, Duke of Sussex, who no longer holds an official royal position since moving to the United States, is currently on a surprise trip to Ukraine, where he claims to be going “not as a politician,” but as a “soldier” and “in a humanitarian capacity.” The son of King Charles III declared, “the United States has a special role in this story. Not just due to its power, but because when Ukraine relinquished its nuclear weapons, America helped ensure respect for the sovereignty and borders of this country.”
And he added, “it is time for the United States to show leadership, to demonstrate that they know how to uphold their international commitments – not out of charity, but because of the lasting role they play in global security and stability.”
“I appreciate his advice,” Trump said, dismissing the prince’s remarks. “Prince Harry does not speak on behalf of the United Kingdom, that’s for sure. I think I speak more on behalf of the United Kingdom than Prince Harry.” And he added, “But I appreciate his advice.”
Before responding to the journalist’s question, the US president inquired about the prince’s well-being, saying, “How is he doing? How is his wife? Send him my regards.”
Regarding a dinner with King Charles III and Queen Camilla during their upcoming official visit to the United States next week, Trump did not directly answer whether the prince would be invited. Speaking of the king, the president said, “he is a friend of mine. We are looking forward to it. We have talked and we will have a great time.”
He also mentioned that the guests at the dinner will be “great people” who “love the UK,” asserting that he also loves the UK. Before listing some recent “big mistakes” made by British authorities, such as “immigration” or “energy,” he suggested, “you should open up the North Sea to Aberdeen.” And then he moved on to another topic.
