What is the status of negotiations between Iran and the United States? Three days before the ceasefire expires, opinions differ. According to Tehran, the discussions are far from being concluded. On the contrary, Donald Trump believes they are “very good”.
Tankers at a standstill. Images were broadcast on Saturday, April 18 in the evening by Iranian television to show that Tehran controls the Strait of Hormuz. However, it is impossible to know when they were taken. An Iranian journalist comments: “In our territorial waters, a boat is at a standstill. It is a ship carrying liquefied gas. It is awaiting instructions to enter or exit this zone of the strait.”
The commercial artery is frozen, resembling the negotiations between Tehran and Washington. Will the United States intervene? According to the American press, the Navy is considering a large-scale operation: the interception of all ships linked to Iran, on all oceans. For several days now, the American military has been blocking Iranian ports. According to the command center, they have already forced 23 ships from Iranian ports to retreat.
However, Tehran remains steadfast. The head of Parliament wants to take his time in the negotiations. “Some problems have been resolved, others have not. There have been other proposals, but we are still far from a final agreement,” said Mohammad Baher Ghalibaf, President of the Iranian Parliament.
After fifty days of war, Donald Trump seems more eager to break the diplomatic deadlock. “We are in great confusion. It seems like the United States is making big waves in this strait issue. And on the other hand, the Iranians have the long term on their side,” analyzes Thierry Garcin, a geopolitician and researcher associated with the University of Paris City. The outcome of the negotiations remains uncertain three days before the end of the ceasefire.
