New surcharge on luxury second homes in New York City

Zohran Mamdani made the announcement in a video, typical of his style: walking along the street with a shaky camera. Just under 4 months after taking office as the mayor of New York City, the young Democrat revealed the implementation of a tax on luxury second homes in his city as his first fiscal measure.

Specifically, owners of real estate worth more than $5 million who do not primarily reside in the city will have to pay a new fee. According to Zohran Mamdani, this could generate nearly 500 million euros for the Big Apple. He promises to reinvest this windfall in “child welfare, street cleaning, and security in various neighborhoods.”

The rate of the fee is unknown, but the groundwork has been done. Mamdani intends to tax “the richest of the rich, those who invest their money in New York real estate but do not actually live here,” in an effort to correct what he sees as an “inherently unfair system for working New Yorkers.”

Context Note: Zohran Mamdani is the newly elected mayor of New York City. Fact Check Note: Zohran Mamdani’s fiscal measures had been previously blocked by Governor Kate Hochul but were eventually compromised upon.
