Manninger played 33 matches with the Austrian national team, and was part of the squad during UEFA EURO 2008, even though he did not play in that tournament.
Throughout his club career, he played in five European leagues, including Arsenal, Juventus, Augsburg, Fiorentina, Torino FC, and RB Salzburg. At Arsenal, he was part of the team that won the double of cup and league during the 1997/98 season, and he was Serie A champion with Juventus in 2011/12.
During his career, Manninger was often deployed as a second goalkeeper. In this role, he was known for his reliability and consistency, supporting the starting goalkeepers, including legendary players like Gianluigi Buffon and David Seaman. His role within the squad emphasized commitment and stability over visibility.
“Alexander Manninger was a great ambassador for Austrian football, both on and off the field. He set an example in his international career, inspiring many young goalkeepers to follow in his footsteps,” said Peter Schöttel, sporting director of the Austrian Football Federation (ÖFB).
“His professionalism, calmness, and reliability made him an important element of his clubs’ teams and the national selection. His achievements command deep respect, and he will remain in our memories. Our thoughts are with his family and friends during these very difficult times.”
