Charles III Prepares for Sojourn Across the Pond on 250th Anniversary of US Independence

It is a challenge to reconcile the unpredictability of President Donald Trump with the composure and diplomacy that Charles III must exhibit under all circumstances. From April 27 to 30, the sovereign will be in the United States to celebrate the 250th anniversary of American Independence. It took six months – including a Middle East war in between – for Buckingham Palace advisors and those in Washington to agree on the schedule.

The goal? To prevent the American President from going off script in public, catching Charles III off guard. Upon his arrival, the king and head of state will meet in an informal private meeting in the Oval Office over a cup of tea. No spectators will be present in this iconic room where President Zelensky faced the wrath of Donald Trump and J.D. Vance last year in front of cameras worldwide. The sovereign will even be invited to sit under a bust of Winston Churchill, a new decoration piece added by the American President.

A Tense International Context

For the remainder, a rigorous security check will prevent any emotional outburst from the guests. Like the Washington garden party where participants will be carefully selected. Before the state banquet scheduled for the evening of the first day, the highlight will be the address given to Congress by “His Majesty, recognizing the challenges our countries face.” Queen Elizabeth did the same in September 1991 during a previous trip.

Next stop will be New York the following day to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, a few months ahead. Some engagements, details not revealed yet, will focus on the environment, ending in Virginia on the third day with some public appearances on the agenda. A delicate visit for the sovereign amidst tense UK-US relations following Donald Trump’s fierce criticism of Keir Starmer, the British Prime Minister, at the start of the Iran war.

“This visit is an opportunity to reaffirm and renew our bilateral ties as we face these challenges together in the national interest of the United Kingdom,” a Palace spokesperson commented. President Trump is delighted to host Charles III. On April 15, speaking to Sky News, he refers to the sovereign as a “great gentleman.” “I have known him for a long time. He’s a fantastic, fantastic person,” he added. The American billionaire also emphasizes that his strained relationship with Sir Keir “will not overshadow” the royal visit. Yet, he expresses disappointment that Britain and other NATO allies did not join the war against Iran “when we needed them.”
