A mountain of toys for a staggering amount. On Wednesday, April 8, authorities in Kern County, California, intercepted three fleeing men in two stolen vans.
During the search of the trucks, agents were surprised to find “a large quantity of Lego products,” as explained by the local sheriff’s office in a press release. The cargo, stolen while traveling between two cities in the region, was estimated to be worth about one million dollars (over 850,000 euros). Investigators currently do not know if the perpetrators intentionally targeted the toy stock.
Plastic Brick Trafficking
In recent years, thefts of Lego products have skyrocketed according to vandalized carriers. They explain that this is due to the increase in the resale value of these highly sought-after plastic toys. But also to the size of the pieces and kits that make them impossible to track, facilitating quick resale on online markets.
In October 2025, still in California, police discovered tens of thousands of Lego pieces in a house and arrested a man who was trafficking these stolen collectibles.
According to the New York Times, merchandise thefts in the United States have generally skyrocketed in recent months. The losses related to these thefts were estimated at around 725 million dollars in 2025, a 60% increase compared to 2024. The National Insurance Crime Bureau and the FBI estimate that the total annual cost to the American economy amounts to several tens of billions of dollars.
