They needed to win and hope La Roche-sur-Yon failed against Locminé to move up to League 3. The Girondins de Bordeaux failed in their quest after the draw with Avranches (3-3) on May 16 and will not finish first in Group A of National 2. The men led by former French international Rio Mavuba were caught up in the score after leading 3-1. Even if they had kept the advantage at the final whistle, the promotion would not have been confirmed as La Roche-sur-Yon also won (2-0) at the same time. Although they did not achieve a sporting promotion to the new L3, the professional division that replaces the National, there is still a slim chance of promotion for Bordeaux through administrative means. If several National clubs face financial difficulties or refuse to transition to professional status, Bordeaux could hope to reach the third division, two years after their relegation from Ligue 1 to the fourth division following a financial restructuring.
