French striker Mbappé was booed by the entire Madrid public during the match against Oviedo. Absent due to injury since late April, the Real Madrid player returned to the field to face criticism from the Spanish press and many Madrid fans. He was met with jeers upon his return to the pitch on Thursday at Santiago Bernabéu Stadium.
Known for his individualistic attitude and recent trip to Sardinia in early May while his teammates played against Espanyol Barcelona, Mbappé faced his first backlash since joining Madrid in 2024. He was heavily booed during the warm-up and when he entered the game in the 68th minute, as well as every time he touched the ball thereafter.
His absence in the recent Clasico match, which saw Barcelona clinching the La Liga title and condemning Real Madrid to a trophy-less season, has sparked further controversies in Spain about his perceived selfish behavior. Some fans have called for his departure on social media, while others criticized him for leaving the training center with a smile just after the altercation between Tchouaméni and Valverde.
The French superstar is enduring a frustrating second season with Real Madrid, showcasing individual brilliance with 41 goals in 42 matches but once again failing to secure a major trophy.
