“It’s his choice, he’s an adult”: without defending or condemning him, FC Barcelona coach Hansi Flick expressed mixed feelings on Tuesday, May 12, regarding the gesture of his star forward Lamine Yamal, who waved a Palestinian flag during the celebratory parade of Barcelona’s victory on Monday.
“These are not things I usually approve of,” Flick said in a press conference on Tuesday. “I told him it’s his choice, he’s an adult,” he added with nuance. During the Blaugranas’ parade through the streets of Barcelona, the 18-year-old forward, second in the Ballon d’Or rankings last year, was seen holding a Palestinian flag from the bus where the players were situated.
“We focus on playing football and we have to consider what the public expects of us,” Flick added. The Barcelona team secured their 29th La Liga title on Sunday, the second consecutive one, by defeating Real Madrid 2-0 at Camp Nou. “When I saw the people in the streets, so moved, it was an incredible feeling. I was very moved,” Flick stated. “That’s why we are here: to play football, to make people happy.”
