The face is still unknown to the general public. However, in recent weeks, Axel Lassus has been gradually establishing himself in the daily life of the professional group at Stade Brestois. At just 17 years old, the midfielder, who was trained at the Etoile Sportive Gimontoise Football club in Gers, has been making appearances on the match sheets in Ligue 1.
On Sunday, May 10th, the young player was once again part of the Brittany team for a dream match against Paris Saint-Germain, on the 33rd matchday of the championship. It was his third match sheet in Ligue 1, after Lens and Lorient.
Brest suffered a 1-0 defeat at Parc des Princes, but Axel Lassus experienced the game at the highest level, although he did not enter the field.
With two matchdays left in the championship, the hope of a first appearance in Ligue 1 remains alive. Brest still has to face Strasbourg on Wednesday (rescheduled match) and Angers on Sunday. Two more opportunities for the young midfielder to finally discover the elite of French football.
A Journey from Gimont to Castelmaurou
Prior to moving to Brittany, Axel Lassus grew up playing football in Gers. The left-footer was trained at ES Gimont, where his father, Fabien, remains an important figure.
Recognized for his technical qualities, the young player continued his development at the Football Academy in Castelmaurou, Haute-Garonne, a renowned regional training center.
In 2023, Stade Brestois decided to invest in him. Two years later, he was already knocking on the door of the professional team.
This season, Axel Lassus stood out with the Brest U19 team. The attacking midfielder played 24 matches and scored four goals. He notably scored braces against Saint-Lo and Stade Briochin, performances that caught the attention of the professional coaching staff.
In early February, during the Breton derby against Lorient, Eric Roy included him in the professional team for the first time. The Brest coach stated in an interview with Ouest-France: “He has potential in terms of technique. He has a lot to develop. We had him training with us, and we found him interesting.” A few weeks later, he participated in his first training sessions with the first team.
The Breton coach added: “We were missing players in midfield, so we brought him with us.” The young man seems to have seized his opportunity.
Rapid Rise at Just 17 Years Old
Born on July 7, 2008, in Toulouse, Axel Lassus will only reach his majority in a few weeks. Despite his young age, the Gers native is already experiencing the environment of elite football, interacting daily with the professional players at Brest and experienced players like Ludovic Ajorque, Brendan Chardonnet, and Lucas Tousart.
In a league where young talents are taking their place more quickly, the midfielder continues his learning process with patience. His technical profile, left foot quality, and game vision fuel hopes of seeing him shine as a professional.
Now it remains to be seen if Eric Roy will give him his first minutes in Ligue 1 before the end of the season. In Gers, especially in Gimont, many will follow closely the last two matches of Stade Brestois.
