Zero increase expected for TV rights
L’Equipe reports that Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 clubs have received a highly anticipated letter regarding the projected amounts they will receive next season from TV rights. The only good news is that they should not decrease, despite the departure of beIN Sports and the end of the financial penalty from DAZN. However, given the current situation with only 1 million loyal subscribers, even if an increase is expected in addition to the tariff changes, there will be no improvement in the financial situation.
The business plan envisioned at the launch of Ligue 1+ has already collapsed since it initially mentioned €320 million in revenue for the second year. Currently, €170 million is expected, along with €137 million from international rights. Now, there will be much debate over the distribution of these total 412 million, even if CVC will receive €121 million along the way. Complex calculations will follow among European clubs, aid to relegated teams, Ligue 2 formations, etc. In the end, the total amount will be close to the very low sum received by elite clubs this season, and the DNCG will closely monitor that TV rights are not considered increased in the accounts. Because the champion of France in 2027 will only receive €11.7 million in TV rights, compared to €3.6 million for the relegated club, which is insignificant compared to club budgets.
