The incident occurred around 9 a.m. local time when the two planes collided mid-flight and crashed in the parking lot of an electric car dealership on Avenida das Américas.

According to witnesses and reports from authorities, the Bell 206 helicopter exploded on impact with the ground, creating a huge column of black smoke visible several kilometers away.

The fire on the plane spread quickly, reducing to ashes around twenty electric cars parked in the parking lot of the BYD dealership. Debris from the crash was scattered over a radius of at least 100 meters, and many pieces of the aircraft landed on the roofs of nearby buildings.

The second helicopter, a Eurocopter AS350, crashed inverted but did not catch fire.

The accident caused a shock wave due to the presence of important personalities from the international entertainment world. Authorities confirmed that American singer-songwriter Oliver Tree, 32, was among the victims. He was in Brazil as part of a world tour and had just performed in São Paulo on June 6.

Other victims included Argentine YouTuber Gaspar Prim (known as Gaspi), Argentine director Lucas Vignale, Brazilian music producer Lucas Brito Chaves and two pilots, Alexandre Souza and Charles Marsillac.

Rio de Janeiro Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere briefly announced after the incident that “there were foreigners on board one of the two planes.”

Firefighters encountered considerable difficulty in bringing the fire under control, as the vehicles affected were electric cars using lithium-ion batteries. Lt. Col. Contreiras explained: “When these batteries catch fire, they release highly toxic gases and increase both the temperature and intensity of the fire. Extinguishing a fire in one of these vehicles requires three to four times more water than a typical car fire.

Although the tragedy caused many casualties, Mr. Contreiras also noted that the fact that the plane crashed in a parking lot rather than in densely populated residential areas nearby helped avoid a worse scenario: “Given the surrounding residential areas, the accident could have been much more tragic. The Brazilian Center for Aviation Accident Investigation and Prevention (CENIPA) and the National Civil Aviation Authority (ANAC) have opened an investigation to determine the cause of the incident.

According to initial information, one of the two helicopters may not have been authorized to fly. Furthermore, the archives show that the owner of the device registered PP-MAC had already been subject to a sanction by the ANAC in July 2025 for having refused to provide the inspectors with the accounting documents and necessary information.
