On the occasion of its tenth anniversary, the American Cosmograph is preparing a big festive evening open to all on Tuesday June 16. Between aperitifs, open-air concerts, surprises and preview screenings, the independent cinema intends to celebrate a decade. An appointment which will also be an opportunity to look back on the unique history of this emblematic room of the 7th Art, whose origins date back to the beginning of the 20th century.

To celebrate its tenth anniversary, the American Cosmograph cinema team put together an evening event on Tuesday June 16. Dedicated to a cinema since 1907, the American Cosmograph quickly took part in the craze for the 7e Art in Toulouse. More than one film buff has set foot on the pavement of rue Montardy, in the city center, since its vocation will be extended in 1949 with the opening of Rio and, from 1993, by that of Utopia.

“In 2016, we bought it with the support of Utopia since I was their employee at that time and two major files were then in progress: the renegotiation of the rent and the implementation of accessibility work for the disabled, explains Jérémy Breta, the programmer of the structure. We took the risk at a time when cinema was doing well and we had to begin work which was delayed by the Covid crisis. So it was in 2023 that they were made and now the cinema is brand new!” The three rooms with 68, 127 and 240 seats now welcome all audiences and even more so to celebrate this tenth anniversary announced for June 16.

Surprises and cinema

“That evening, rue Montardy will be closed, we welcome everyone from 6 p.m., we have a drink, we snack, we chat, we have a few little surprises to reveal. The bluegrass group Bees Knees Breakfast will play for an hour and, from 8 p.m., three screenings in theaters will follow with three films including my absolute favorite at Cannes this year: “Soudain” by Ryûsuke Hamaguchi with Virginie Efira and Tao Okamoto which won double prize for interpretation women’s festival at the last festival and which lasts more than 3 hours.

The second film is “Jim Queen” by Marco Nguyen and Nicolas Athané, a completely crazy and super funny animated film. Finally, the third film, “The Last Session” by Pan Nalin is a sort of Indian cousin of “Cinéma Paradiso” dedicated to the discovery of cinema on film by a 10-year-old Indian boy and it is a wonderful tribute to cinema. So we thought it would be nice to also broadcast it for our birthday…
