Bruce Willis is one of the icons of his generation. Legendary actor of Die Hard, Pulp Fiction, Sixième Sens or even The Fifth Elementthe American has inspired millions of people around the world. But in 2022, news falls: Bruce Willis suffers from an incurable disease, frontotemporal degeneration. A disease which results in language and communication difficulties, behavioral changes, then motor disorders and memory loss. An incurable and degenerative disease, which continues to grow.
The first symptoms… and the first doubts
Bruce Willis’ first symptoms were quite mild, he himself did not realize it, but Emma Heming noticed them directly. In an interview given to Elle this June 10, she remembers: “During meals or evenings, he gradually withdrew. At first I thought it was a hearing problem. Then his childhood stutter, which he had managed to overcome, returned.â€
If these first changes in behavior influenced his social relationships (and also certain filming), they quickly had repercussions on the couple: “We no longer understood each other. I felt like my marriage was falling apart. I even considered leaving him“she admits, before revealing, “I knew Bruce, I knew something else was going on. Once the diagnosis was made, I understood that these were not conscious choices on his part. It was his brain that was changing…
The day everything changed
Married since 2009, Emma Heming (23 years his junior) has not given up… on the contrary. However, the day she learned of her husband’s illness, her world collapsed: “We left with a brochure and an appointment set for later. We were told that there was no treatment and that Bruce’s illness was too advanced… she remembers. “I would have liked a sheet with concrete steps: who to call, what to do next… But I also refused to ask for help.â€
Over time, the ex-model learned to accept outstretched hands. Today, she lives with her husband and their two children, Mabel Ray (2012) and Evelyn Penn (2014), while trying to “protect†her husband and “préserver†his privacy, without thinking about “vie d’aprèsâ€. Present every day by his side, she says she is enjoying the last moments with the man who has shared her life for more than 16 years and “that she was made to love”.
