The Italian director Laura Samani herself discovered Stuparich’s novel in her final year, while she was studying at the Trieste high school. She decided, in 2020, to make it the subject of her second film, which benefited from the support of Arte France.

She moved the narrative to the early 2000s, using the context of the time.  This idea from last year therefore brought me back to 2007 and 2008 which are personal to me, but which are also those which precede the arrival of social networks. These are also those where Slovenia joins the European Union, which will have many social and economic consequences for the city of Trieste which is on the border. And then it’s the end of a certain golden age just before the crisis in the United States Â,” she explains.

Laura Samani co-wrote the screenplay for the film with Elisa Dondi, who had already accompanied her on her first film, Small body (2022). An Italian year gathered, on the screen, Stella Wendick, Giacomo Covi, or again Pietro Giustolisi.
