What seemed incompatible for a long time has become almost obvious. On the island of Majorca, the Spanish temple of partying in the Balearic Islands (Mediterranean), schlager music and German rap now have their place alongside the most fashionable artists and DJs of the moment, reports the dpa agency via the German newspaper Badische Zeitung.
Haftbefehl, the superstar from Siberia, Capital Bra, Sido… big names in German rap performed at the opening of the season, in the huge open-air beer garden “Megapark” in El Arenal.
A great reach
For specialists, this brilliance of the ballermann genre and German music in international festive events is not surprising. “The scene is so diverse that there are few reservations about showing up at such events,” comments Robin Schmidt, a German journalist specializing in the genre.
And added: “Schlager and German rap are among the genres with the greatest reach in the streaming sector. And young vacationers grew up with rap.”
Catchy choruses and sunny themes
The recipe for success? Catchy choruses, memorable lyrics and themes like celebration, friendship, love or flirting. Lyrics and subjects particularly suited to the atmosphere of the beach and vacations in the sun among young people, therefore. This is demonstrated in Alsace by the popularity of singer Robin Leon.
This new expansion of schlager, however, creates doubts, particularly among the original, older German public, who fear seeing the genre transform or losing its codes.
