The 2026 edition of the Met Gala, the annual high mass of luxury and fashion chaired this year by multi-billionaire Jeff Bezos and his wife Lauren Sanchez Bezos, took place on Sunday against a backdrop of demonstrations against the opulence of the ultra-rich.
On this first Monday in May, the famous staircase of Metropolitan Museum of Art (Met) dressed up as a spring garden to welcome celebrities under a ceiling draped in white wisteria.

Pop stars, athletes, ultra-rich personalities and the Hollywood elite have posed to show off their flamboyant finery between two rows of photographers trying to capture one of these photos that are setting social networks ablaze.
Beyoncé, Sabrina Carpenter, Bad Bunny, Doja Cat, Kim Kardashian, Madonna and Cardi B, among others, appeared in eccentric outfits multiplying allusions, some more obscure than others, to art in all its forms.

The institution raised several tens of millions of dollars for the occasion, thanks in part to funding from Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, its controversial honorary president.
His role in the event, shared with his wife, sparked a wave of indignation among activists, who denounce the intimacy and excessive luxury depicted by the gala.

A few weeks earlier, a campaign calling for a boycott of the gala in New York was launched by the organization Everyone hates Elon
(in reference to the billionaire and founder of SpaceX, Elon Musk), pointing out the rapprochement between these technology giants and President Donald Trump.
Monday evening, demonstrators gathered around the museum chanting: Let’s eat the rich
, Let’s tax the rich
or Bezos and Epstein’s class are no longer fashionable

Much anticipated for her first appearance in 10 years, singer Beyoncé showed off a skeletal dress by French designer Olivier Rousteing on the red carpet. For her part, true to her passion for eccentric costumes, model Heidi Klum was transformed into a hyper-realistic statue inspired by Italian sculptor Raffaele Monti.
Last year, the famous 5th Avenue museum raised a record amount of $31 million under the theme of fashion through the black diasporas in the United States.
