Toei Games: A New Player in the Gaming Industry Emerges

Toei Games is the new gaming brand from the Japanese entertainment group Toei Company.

Toei Company is diving into the video game industry with Toei Games. Instead of relying on well-known brands like Dragon Ball, One Piece, Kamen Rider, or Super Sentai right away, the Japanese entertainment group is initially focusing on new original products.

With Toho and Sunrise, Toei Company is one of the biggest names in the animation and entertainment industry. The Japanese animation giant announced its expansion into another major entertainment market: games. They unveiled a new brand called Toei Games on April 21, 2026, which will primarily focus on PC game releases through Steam initially. An expansion to consoles like the Nintendo Switch 2 (currently $449 on Amazon) is planned for the future. The official Toei Games website is now live.

For fans, the big question will likely be which franchise the group will use to make its mark in the gaming world. With Dragon Ball, One Piece, Sailor Moon, Digimon, and Kamen Rider, there are many iconic brands to choose from. The surprising answer comes as Toei Games apparently intends to start by developing entirely new intellectual properties.

Three projects have already been named:

  • KILLA – a mysterious 3D adventure where the protagonist Valhalla investigates her mentor’s murder on an unknown island.
  • Hino – a 2D dark fantasy game with a distinctive ballpoint pen aesthetic.
  • Debug Nephemee – a 2D adventure game where the world is infested with “bugs.”

This initiative aligns with the current trend in Japan where other media companies like Sanrio, Shueisha, Toho, and Parco are also expanding into the gaming sector. So far, community reactions have been cautiously curious. Some Reddit users are excited about the increased competition in the anime game market and hope to see games based on Kamen Rider, Super Sentai, or Precure in the long run. However, skepticism also exists, with doubts about Toei’s immediate ability to offer high-quality games. Some point out that brands like Dragon Ball or One Piece may not automatically be featured in Toei Games due to licensing reasons.
