The Font-Romeu casino organized an evening centered around Caravaggio, featuring a presentation of his work and a film screening.
The Font-Romeu casino hosted an evening dedicated to one of the most fascinating painters in art history: Caravaggio.
Organized by the association Emergence, in partnership with Ciné-Club Cerdagne Capcir, the event offered a dual program combining artistic insight and film projection around the master of chiaroscuro.
A Dive into Caravaggio’s Work
Starting at 6 p.m., a presentation led by Alexandre Charrett-Dykes, a doctor in art history, provided a historical and aesthetic context for the Italian painter’s work. The dense and lively approach outlined the major milestones of Caravaggio’s career, from his beginnings in Milan to his death in Porto Ercole in 1610.
The speaker emphasized the major break represented by the painter in European painting history. “There is a before and after Caravaggio,” he summarized, describing a body of work based on radical naturalism, violent light contrasts, and a representation of religious figures without idealization.
This approach, both admired and fiercely contested in its time, deeply marked the 17th century and influenced numerous European artists.
The painter’s journey, as discussed during the event, is inseparable from a tumultuous life. Born Michelangelo Merisi in modest circumstances, Caravaggio established himself in Rome at the end of the 16th century thanks to influential connections, before experiencing a life marked by conflicts, disputes, and a conviction for murder. A chaotic trajectory that still fuels the legend of the artist today.
Cinema and Interaction with the Audience
At 8:45 p.m., the evening continued with a screening of the film “Caravaggio” by Michele Placido, followed by an interaction with the audience. This cinematic work extended the reflections started earlier in the evening, offering a different perspective on the painter’s life and creation.
The event brought together a large and curious audience eager to discover or rediscover a major figure in art history, blending knowledge with popular culture. An initiative praised by the organizers, who thanked the Ciné-Club Cerdagne Capcir, the Font-Romeu Casino, and the municipality for their logistical and financial support.
Between film screening and historical analysis, this evening confirmed the enduring interest of the public in Caravaggio, an artist whose work continues, more than four centuries after his death, to provoke discussions and fascination.
