Nathalie Baye: Remembering a French Icon
“Nathalie Baye, it’s a voice recognizable among all, a diction, a tone, a rare and moving smile, a gaze filled with sweetness and audacity,” says Isabelle, 60, from Lyon, when talking about the actress who passed away on Friday at 77 after a neurodegenerative disease. This news has sparked emotions across France. The actress leaves behind an impressive filmography, four César awards, and over fifty years of career.
“All her films have marked our lives. From ‘La Balance’ to ‘A Week’s Vacation’ passing through ‘The Return of Martin Guerre’ or ‘The Young Lieutenant’,” says Lucien, 81, from Savigneux (Loire). Christian, 77, from Lyon, remembers his first encounter with the actress on the big screen precisely: “It was in ‘Day for Night’ by Truffaut. What charm, what grace!” he exclaims. For Marie-Claude, 74, from Meulan-en-Yvelines, the revelation dates back to 1983: “I discovered this moving actress in ‘I Married a Shadow’. I loved Nathalie Baye because she had talent and could play anything, from drama to comedy.” Hervé, 58, from Dijon, discovered the actress with ‘La Balance’: “A very good French crime film,” he believes.
“Her incredibly moving embodiment”
Over the decades, Nathalie Baye worked with top directors, from Jean-Luc Godard to François Truffaut, Steven Spielberg, Bertrand Blier, or Xavier Dolan. If one film had to be remembered with the actress, Véronique, 61, from Ardèche, would choose ‘The Return of Martin Guerre’: “She is incredibly authentic, gentle. And this is how she led her career and private life, with feeling, softly,” she believes. As for Isabelle, mentioned earlier, she recalls in detail: ‘A Week’s Vacation’, ‘The Green Room’, ‘La Balance’, ‘Every Other Weekend’, ‘The Young Lieutenant’, ‘Just the End of the World’.”
Because for our reader, one of Nathalie Baye’s great qualities was her eclecticism. “I loved the way she zigzagged between art house and popular films, giving depth and substance to characters like those she played in ‘I Married a Shadow’, ‘Venus Beauty Institute’, ‘The Return of Martin Guerre’… Her incredibly moving embodiment gave these films a special light,” she analyzes. A view shared by Estelle, 54, from Luttange (Moselle): “We will remember an actress of great finesse, capable of portraying very different characters with remarkable accuracy.” Those who saw her on stage also remember with stars in their eyes, like Nadia, 48, from Mulhouse (Haut-Rhin): “She played ‘The False Confidences’ by Marivaux. Her grace, her natural elegance, and her humility struck me. I still remember her radiant smile.”
“The memory of an elegant woman”
But beyond the actress, it is also the woman who has left a mark on the French people. Her intelligence, elegance, simplicity… “I hold the memory of a very charming and superb actress. A beautiful person, honest, loyal, disinterested, authentic as we find no more,” says Alina. Yves, 74, from Longvic (Côte-d’Or), is also enthusiastic: “She was an adorable actress who was never involved in scandals. She was always smiling in interviews and never criticized others.” Marie, 68, from Bas-Rhin emphasizes, “her dancer’s grace that never left her, whether on screen or television.”
Her enduring popularity has not faded among those who had the chance to meet her. Gidy, 36, from Michelbach-le-Bas (Haut-Rhin), remembers a chance encounter in a restaurant in Gstaad: “She was with Johnny Hallyday, Laëtitia, and Laura. She was attentive, discreet, with a quiet strength. I have kept the memory of an elegant, protective woman full of maternal love,” he recalls with emotion. Proof that Nathalie Baye will continue to live long in the collective memory.
