Columbia College celebrated students in the School of Arts & Sciences during a vibrant and dynamic week-long series of events from April 7-10 on main campus.

The Arts & Sciences Showcase featured events such as Communitas, an undergraduate research conference; the 12th annual Science Symposium; a concert preview by the Jane Froman Singers and Froman Treble Choir; and a reception for the ongoing Student Art Exhibition.

“Throughout the showcase, we saw our students at their very best,” said President Dr. Toby Arquette. “From engaging panel discussions and insightful scientific presentations to inspiring musical performances and thought-provoking art, the week truly highlighted the depth and breadth of the work happening across the departments and programs within the School of Arts & Sciences.”

At Communitas on Wednesday, April 8, students presented their work during a morning of panel discussions. The subject matter represented programs including Communication Studies, Graphic Design, Statistics, English, Sociology, Philosophy, Art, and Child Development.

Additionally, student organizations such as The Blue Print student design agency, Peer Educators, Mock Trial Club, and Model UN Club participated to further highlight a diverse array of student learning.

On the afternoon of April 8, the Science Symposium provided students the opportunity to share research projects in Brouder Science Center, as attendees traveled poster to poster to learn about various topics.

To cap the event, faculty honored students with an awards ceremony. Senior Jackson Seibert was recognized for the best overall poster and earned the Natural Sciences Distinguished Graduate Award, while Eric Garcia was named the Computer Science and Mathematics Distinguished Graduate.

The Jane Froman Singers and Froman Treble Choir performed on Thursday, April 9, in Dorsey Gym, treating the audience to selections from their spring “Unbound” concert, where Broadway meets the culinary arts.

Earlier in the week, students participated in a master class as part of the Cirome Concert & Masterclass Series.

Last but not least, on Friday, April 10, students exhibited their artwork in Brown Hall before a reception with faculty, family, and friends in Sidney Larson Gallery. The gallery remains open for viewing through the end of the semester. Serena Davis was named the Juror’s Choice Award for Artistic Excellence for her piece entitled “I Can See It, Like a Memory.”

The goal of the week was to provide experiences that help students see themselves as scholars and contributors while also building community across the academic school, said Dean Dr. Jennifer Jewell.

“This showcase reflects what we care deeply about – students engaging meaningfully with their learning and having the opportunity to share that work beyond the classroom,” Jewell said. “It brings together disciplines and voices from across the School and creates a welcoming space for our students.”
