The new Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar promised this Saturday to serve his country, and not to act as a monarch, before the parliament which officially elected him to lead the country.

“I will not rule Hungary, but I will serve my country. I will serve it as long as my services are useful and the nation needs them,” he said, adding that “millions of people have chosen change” after 16 years with Viktor Orban as prime minister.

Peter Magyar officially became the new Prime Minister of Hungary, after the vote of Parliament following the legislative elections of April 12 where he won a crushing victory against the nationalist Viktor Orban.

The hope of « a new élan »

The pro-European conservative, who burst onto the Hungarian political scene just two years ago, was elected by 140 votes in favor, 54 against and one abstention in a parliament where his Tisza party holds 141 seats out of 199. consecration which took place in the absence of Viktor Orban who gave up his post as deputy.

The President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen congratulated Peter Magyar, ensuring that the hope of a “new impetus” in Hungary constituted a “strong signal in these difficult times”. “On this Europe Day, our hearts are in Budapest,” she said in a publication on X.

The President of the European Council Antonio Costa welcomed “a new chapter in the history of Hungary”. “We are ready to work with the new Hungarian government,” he added during a press briefing in Brussels.
