Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-South Carolina, appeared on CBS’ “Face the Nation” with Margaret Brennan and stressed diplomacy amid ongoing talks with Iran as President Donald Trump’s administration looks to end its war in the Middle East.
When asked if he agrees with Texas Sens. Ted Cruz and John Cornyn as well as Louisiana Sen. Bill Cassidy, all wary about sending U.S. funds to Iran, about their public comments questioning the Trump administration, Graham said that the United States should continue diplomatic talks with Iran but believes the talks will fail.
“The money Iran gets is not going to change the future of Iran,” Graham said. “It’s not enough to reconstruct the country.” He added, “Let’s try a diplomatic solution. I think it’s going to fail.”
Then, Graham said that after spending over four hours with Trump on June 19, he believes Trump will take the Strait of Hormuz using force if talks fail. Graham said the U.S. will control the Strait of Hormuz, a key waterway, and charge a fee for all who go through, expanding the Abraham Accords, a diplomatic agreement, and require Saudi Arabia to join.
If Iran resists U.S. control, Graham said the U.S. would “obliterate” the country. “If Iran contests control of the Strait of Hormuz by the United States, we will obliterate them,” Graham told Brennan. “So, to all the people listening, if this diplomatic effort fails, President Trump is going to take the Strait of Hormuz.”
The closure of the Strait of Hormuz, crucial to the world’s oil supply, has harmed the fragile peace deal negotiated by the Trump administration. It also highlights Iran’s geographical and economic leverage in the region – and intention to use it. The U.S. has so far failed to rein in the Israeli government.
Iran has previously said it closed the Strait after the country’s leaders cited an “ongoing violation of the ceasefire” by Israel after military strikes in Lebanon, according to state media reports June 20.
