Jefferson noted McCarthy’s implemented the experience he added last year and has shown improvement in reading coverages and making different throws: “Everything doesn’t have to be a hundred miles per hour; some throws he can put a little touch on it and get it to the spot.”

And as McCarthy furthers his development, Jefferson is fostering his understanding of the younger quarterback, as well as Murray, and how they both operate on and off the field.

“They’re two different quarterbacks,” he said. “They both throw differently. They each have a different mindset. It’s all about continuing to work with them, continuing to have the work outside of this building.”

Jefferson described Murray as “a real cool guy” who maintains a calm demeanor.

“Chill,” Jefferson said, smiling.

He and Murray have engaged in easy sideline conversations to learn more about what the other needs on the field, and Jefferson is seeing that connection build.

“A new receiver that he’s throwing to, he’s trying to learn my route running, learning my moves, learning when I’m gonna break, learning how fast I’m running — all of those different things a quarterback needs to throw the ball,” Jefferson said. “Just working with each other, trying to build that chemistry.”
