FOR WATCHING GULF COAST NEWS TODAY. I’M SAMANTHA CROSTON HERE WITH METEOROLOGIST KARA. LIKE A SO CAROLINE BEAUTIFUL SHOT THERE IN NAPLES AS THE SUN COMES UP. WE’RE ALSO BREAKING RECORDS IN NAPLES. WE ARE I JUST TALKED TO THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE TO CONFIRM THE NUMBERS. BUT NAPLES, YOU HAVE SENIOR WETTEST MAY ON RECORD. SO LET’S TALK ABOUT IT. HERE’S HOW MUCH RAIN YOU SAW. 6.9, 5 INCHES OF OBSERVED RAINFALL AT THE NAPLES AIRPORT. NORMALLY DURING THE MONTH OF MAY. YOU SEE 2.6, 2 INCHES OF ACCUMULATED RAINFALL. >> IN MAY DURING THE YEAR. SO THAT IS A BIG JUMP FROM THE NORMAL NUMBERS. AND I WILL SAY THIS IS STILL PRELIMINARY BECAUSE IT IS THE LAST DAY OF MAY. SO WE GOT TO GET THROUGH TODAY BEFORE WE JUMP POTENTIALLY PUMP UP THAT NUMBER A LITTLE BIT MORE. I WILL ALSO SAY GETS A LITTLE TRICKY JUST BECAUSE THE RECORDS FOR THE NAPLES AIRPORT, THEY ONLY GO BACK TO 2002. SO THAT’S A LITTLE OVER 20 YEAR RECORD. THERE’S STILL A BIG DEAL BECAUSE THAT’S A LOT OF RAIN THAT THEY SAW. AND MOST OF IT FELL OVER THE LAST FEW WEEKS OF MAY, RATHER THAN SINCE THE BEGINNING OF THE MONTH. HERE’S WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE OVER THE LAST SEVERAL DAYS OVER 3 INCHES OF RADAR. ESTIMATED RAINFALL AT THE AIRPORT RIGHT THERE IN NAPLES. BUT THE REST OF COLLIER COUNTY ALSO SAW VERY BENEFICIAL RAINFALL SO FAR OVER THE LAST 30 DAYS OR SO. ANOTHER SPOT TO LOOK AT THIS IS FORT MYERS SAW JUST OVER 4 AND A HALF INCHES OF RAIN OVER THE LAST MONTH. THAT IS ABOVE AVERAGE, BUT NOT BREAKING ANY RECORDS IN FORT MYERS. AND THEN WE’LL CHECK IN ON GORDA AS WELL WHERE THEY SAW JUST UNDER 4 AND A HALF INCHES OF RAINFALL TO THERE AT
The Naples Airport saw its wettest May on record with 6.95 inches of rain falling this month! Records only go back to 2002 for the Naples Airport, and it’s still considered preliminary since the month hasn’t ended yet. On average, Naples registers 2.62 inches of rain during the month of May, making this year’s trend far above average. Fort Myers and Punta Gorda also had above-average Mays, but no records were broken there.
