Man believed to be armed with firearm dies after being shot by officer in Wilkinsburg

Allegheny County police said a man who was shot by an officer Tuesday evening in Wilkinsburg has died.Allegheny County police said that at 4:21 p.m., they were notified of an officer-involved shooting near the intersection of Swissvale Avenue and Ross Avenue. Preliminary information indicated a Wilkinsburg police officer was patrolling the area when he encountered an adult man with a gun in the 1000 block of Ross Avenue.Witnesses told police the man approached an officer’s vehicle armed with a handgun, and the officer exited the vehicle, asking the man to drop the weapon. “The officer exited his vehicle, ordered the male to drop the gun, who now had the firearm in his hand, gave him several verbal commands to drop the weapon. He did not drop the weapon. The officer fired shot the male in the chest,” County Police Assistant Superintendent Victor Joseph said. The man was taken to the hospital in critical condition, where he later died. Bystanders told Pittsburgh’s Action News 4 reporter Felicity Taylor they heard one shot. “I just know him from, like, the neighborhood. He’s, you know, most of the time, quiet. But often, sometimes, having, like, delusional rage and yelling at things. We’ve called the police a couple of times just because in being in the middle of the street and everything.
