Meta Platforms has initiated a significant round of layoffs, informing thousands of employees across Asia, Europe, and the United States on Wednesday as the social media giant ramps up its expensive venture into artificial intelligence.

The layoffs, expected to impact around 8,000 workers worldwide, are part of a larger restructuring effort within the company aimed at simplifying operations, reducing management layers, and shifting resources towards AI development. In Singapore, employees were among the first to receive notifications, with some as early as 4 a.m. local time, according to an internal memo reported by Bloomberg News. Workers in Europe and the United States were also expected to receive similar notices as their workdays began.

During this process, Meta has encouraged employees to work remotely, underscoring the magnitude and sensitivity of the layoffs. The engineering and product teams are expected to bear the brunt of the cuts, as per the Bloomberg report. Further job cuts later in the year have not been ruled out.

Meanwhile, Meta is reorganizing its workforce around artificial intelligence. Approximately 7,000 employees have been reassigned to newly established AI-focused groups working on products, infrastructure, and autonomous software agents. The company had just under 80,000 employees by the end of March before the latest reshuffle and layoffs commenced.

Meta executives stated that the company was restructuring teams into flatter, smaller operational units to increase speed, give employees more responsibility, and enhance overall productivity and efficiency.

These actions reflect the growing pressure on Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg to stay competitive in the escalating AI competition with rivals like Alphabet’s Google and OpenAI. Zuckerberg has prioritized artificial intelligence as the company’s central strategic focus, allocating over $100 billion this year solely towards AI-related capital expenditures.

This ambition has reshaped Meta’s operations. Zuckerberg has increasingly urged employees to incorporate AI tools into their daily tasks, especially for software coding and internal productivity functions. He has also explored the use of AI systems to automate aspects of executive management, including gathering employee feedback.

However, the transition has unsettled many within the company. Employees have expressed concerns about job security, morale, and privacy, particularly after reports that Meta intended to gather more detailed data from employee devices—such as keystrokes, mouse movements, and screen activity—to enhance its AI systems. Over 1,000 workers have reportedly signed a petition urging company leadership to cease such practices.
