MIAMI – Gov. Ron DeSantis and Florida Department of Education Commissioner Stasi Kamoutsas held a news conference at Miami Dade College on Friday, where he signed a school safety bill.

DeSantis, who spoke in front of a wall graphic that said “Supporting Safe Schools” signed House Bill 757, a school safety measure that expands Florida’s school guardian program and increases penalties related to gun offenses near schools.
The measure “requires sheriffs to assist public postsecondary educational institutions in implementing guardian programs,” and allows colleges and universities to participate in the program, according to the Florida Senate website. It also directs sheriffs to establish or coordinate guardian training programs under certain conditions.
It states the legislation further “creates a new offense” for discharging a firearm within 1,000 feet of a school and requires individuals arrested for certain offenses to remain in custody until they appear before a judge for bail consideration.
It also places the new offense on the state’s Criminal Punishment Code severity ranking chart and gives education boards authority to adopt related rules.
