If you’ve ever taken an aspirin, added milk to your coffee, fed your pet, or filled a prescription, you’ve benefited from the oversight of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The FDA is considered a global leader in regulating food and medicine, responsible for about a quarter of the U.S. economy.
The FDA commissioner faces tough decisions every day, from rapid approval of Covid-19 vaccines to handling issues like mail-order birth control pills, all while dealing with pressure from powerful companies expecting special treatment.
Dr. Marty Makary, the FDA commissioner under President Donald Trump, recently resigned after being caught in the middle of conflicts between the White House and the Department of Health and Human Services. Kyle Diamantas, a former FDA director, was appointed as the acting FDA commissioner.
Diamantas, a Florida lawyer, faced some controversy for his background in hunting and friendship with Don Jr. His appointment raised questions about the qualifications needed to lead the FDA. Despite this, some experts see him as a logical choice due to the current state of the agency.
Under Makary’s leadership, the FDA saw turmoil and staff departures. Prominent figures like George Tidmarsh and Vinay Prasad faced challenges during their tenures. The controversial approval of fruit-flavored vapes played a role in Makary’s resignation, as he opposed products that targeted children.
Diamantas now holds the position temporarily, awaiting possible Senate confirmation for a permanent appointment. Admiral Brett Giroir is a potential candidate for the role, having experience in healthcare and pandemic response. However, the future of the FDA’s leadership remains uncertain, with Diamantas currently in charge.
