A teenager named Martha Odom was tragically killed in a mass shooting at a Louisiana mall. She was celebrating “senior skip day” and had just returned from a spring break trip to New York City. The incident occurred at the Mall of Louisiana in Baton Rouge, where Martha was caught in the crossfire between two feuding groups.

Martha’s school, Ascension Episcopal School in Lafayette, expressed their grief over her loss and prayed for the healing of the other students involved in the incident. She passed away from a gunshot wound to the chest, and the Coroner’s Office ruled her death a homicide. Five others were injured, including two of Martha’s classmates.

Martha had recently enjoyed a trip to New York City with her family, sharing details of the experience in a student newspaper article. She was a senior editor for the paper and was actively involved in her school’s activities, such as being a captain of the girls’ soccer team and teaching ballet to young children.

The community mourned Martha’s tragic death, with many expressing their sorrow and disbelief. Lafayette Parish Mayor-President and Senator John Kennedy both shared their condolences and expressed outrage at the violence that led to Martha’s untimely death.

Markel Lee, a 17-year-old, turned himself in for his involvement in the shooting and was charged with first-degree murder, among other charges. Another individual, captured on security cameras, is also being sought in connection to the incident.

The community continues to mourn the loss of Martha Odom and seeks justice for the senseless act of violence that took her life.
