COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) – Lyle Lovett visited College Station Thursday, sharing lessons from a decades-long career at the second annual Aggieland Music Industry Summit.
Visit College Station joined forces with Texas A&M’s College of Performance, Visualization, and Fine Arts to bring professionals like Lovett to town to share advice and discuss the ever-changing landscape of the music industry — both in the Brazos Valley and across the country.
Attendees ranged from aspiring musicians to lifelong music fans, all coming together to ask questions and learn from some of the most successful names in the business.
Supporting the local music scene
Texas A&M added a music performance degree program in 2024, with hopes to revive the music scene in the Brazos Valley. Organizers like Adam Drake of the Brazos Valley Live Music Association say events like this are part of an ongoing effort to support up-and-coming musicians and strengthen College Station’s designation as a Texas Music-Friendly City.
“It’s really cool to get students and other people who just want to learn about the music industry all in one place together,†Drake said. “And it’s a great networking opportunity. It’s a great chance for people to hear from professionals.â€
Toby Pipes, music industry relations coordinator at Texas A&M University, said the event is part of a broader effort to grow the local music scene.
“That’s part of the thing with Texas Music Friendly being a part of this too with Visit College Station and the PVFA is we’re doing everything we can because for a long time this was a great music scene and it still is, but anything to get it bigger and bigger because of so many people that have come out of here that have become professional musicians, the scene should be bigger and hopefully we can grow it,†Pipes said.
Organizers say they hope young Aggies who attended remember that no matter where their careers take them, there is a community in Bryan-College Station rooting them on.
