The harvests have begun in Vienne and with them the first crop fires of summer. More than 30 ha were destroyed in Jouhet on Thursday June 11, 2026 before another fire two days later in La Chapelle-Mouliière. Sunday June 14, thirty sheep died in a fire in an agricultural building in Guesnes.
This Monday, June 15, the Vienne firefighters were again mobilized to two fires. In Ayron, a fire of standing wheat, brush and grass destroyed 3 ha at a place called “Vaulorin”. Nineteen firefighters were mobilized.
A second, much larger fire, whose column of smoke was visible as far north as Poitiers and Chauvigny, at 5 p.m., broke out in the afternoon in Vernon.
Five tankers
Around thirty firefighters were mobilized in the area of the place called “Pied-Buzin”, including five tanker trucks from L’Isle-Jourdain, Couhé, Vivonne, Chauvigny and Genay. The mayor of the town is also present on site. Farmers also came to support. At 6 p.m., the Departmental Fire and Rescue Service (Sdis) estimated the burned area at around fifteen hectares. Results which had risen to 29 ha affected at 8 p.m. “Firefighters are currently treating the identified hot spots.”then indicated Sdis.
Vienne firefighters confirm that crop fires are ahead of schedule this summer, particularly due to high temperatures. In 2025, the first large fire of this type did not take place until the beginning of July.
The fire has burned around fifteen hectares so far.
