For the creators of the new Scary Movie, the film is designed as an “antidote to cancel culture”

The new Scary Movie promises to cross all lines, with a schoolboy and trashy humor that its creators, the Wayans family, see as a « antidote » à la « cancel culture »  American. This propensity to ostracize or boycott personalities judged guilty of offensive acts or comments has become widespread in recent years in the United States and elsewhere in the world.

So for the Wayans clan, the sixth part of this franchise parodying horror films with very crude humor, often politically incorrect, is timely. “I think it’s important right now, culturally, so that we can deal with ‘cancel culture’ differently.”Shawn Wayans told AFP in Los Angeles, in parallel with the release of the film in the United States and France this week.

Twenty-six years after the first, the new Scary Movie blithely mocks America’s culture wars around gender issues and the country’s political polarization. We see, for example, a woman being stabbed, before insisting in her last breath that she be referred to by the pronoun “Iel” plutôt that “Elle”. Shawn Wayans is convinced that this new version will please the public. “It’s not because ‘cancel culture’ exists that we should no longer laugh, and I believe that it’s important for the world to be able to laugh, it’s healthy, it’s healing, it’s medicinal.”a-t-il insisté.

Cancel culture “went way too farâ€adds his sister, the actress and comedian Kim Wayans. This film will « annuler la “cancel cultureâ€Â Â»she promises. For his part, director Michael Tiddes took up the challenge of putting together this social satire, which traditionally parodies the latest successful horror films, including The Subtance, Sinners  ou Wednesdaythe Adams Family spin-off. “We have to find a balance between the films we parody, the authentic humor of the Wayans brothers (…) and our own story and our own characters.”he explains. Fans can also rejoice: this sixth opus brings back Doofy, the satirical double of the killer Screamon the screen. But for the Wayans family, who had lost control of the franchise Scary Movie after the second opus, it is much more of a new beginning than a new episode.
