EDUCFI 2026-2027: 5 strong measures to develop the financial culture of the French, and in particular of students

Knowing how to manage a budget, anticipate your expenses and understand the mechanisms of credit cannot be improvised. To help the French achieve this, a new action plan ambitious has just been revealed in order to to increase the financial autonomy of the populationof protect the most vulnerable and of train a generation of responsible adults, masters of their economic choices. And it will start at school.

Five measures to strengthen the financial culture of the French

At the beginning of May, the Minister of the Economy and Finance, Roland Lescure, brought together a panel of experts, including the governor of the Banque de France, around the EDUCFI strategic committee (Economic, Budgetary and Financial Education). Objective: to amplify public policy in terms of economic and financial education in a major action plan over the period 2026-2027. This will take place around five axes:

  • Amplify the strategy to support all citizensÂ: the objective is to democratize access to financial information, with a focus on vulnerable groups and key moments in life (first job, retirement, etc.). The content evolves to address savings, investment, insurance (especially for women), the fight against scams and cyber risks, as well as support for entrepreneurs.
  • Strengthen the visibility of the EDUCFI labelÂ: faced with the abundance of information online, this label guarantees neutral, reliable, free and accessible content. It will be widely promoted among public and private actors to help citizens find their way.
  • Continue the deployment of the EDUCFI Passport in schools: already tested, the program will be generalized to all 4th grade middle school students from September 2026. It will be reinforced in the professional tracks and tested in the general and technological high schools from 2027. This module of a few hours, integrated into the school curriculum, provides practical basics on the budget, the bank account, savings and credit.
  • Position France as a European pilot of dedicated artificial intelligenceÂ: via the EDUCFI+ project, France is developing an innovative tool offering personalized, certified and accessible advice to citizens and entrepreneurs. A preparatory study will be published within a year.
  • Reinforcer l’évaluation des compétences financiersÂ: France will continue to participate in OECD evaluations. Progress will be particularly measured during the PISA 2029 survey, which will include a specific section on financial education.

Why train children in financial education?

The government recalls that, since its creation, the EDUCFI strategy has already raised awareness nearly 1.8 million young people. It highlights concrete results, including a score average financial literacy of the French increased to 12.82/20 during the OECD survey of January 2026. A continuous and encouraging progression since 2021, even if, let’s remember, France still lags behind several of its European neighbors. This rating places it in the middle of the pack among the forty participating countries.

It is precisely for this reason that we can only rejoice at the generalization of financial education courses from the 4th grade. Initiating young people from middle school to money management is crucial to making them responsible and autonomous adults.

In a world marked by immediate consumption, easy credit, omnipresent advertising and digital risksknowing how to keep a budget, distinguishing between needs and desires, saving or protecting yourself against scams becomes essential. These learnings strengthen self-confidencesignificantly reduce the risk of over-indebtedness and promote equality of opportunity.

As we indicated in a previous article, children – and particularly young girls – from environments where these subjects are little discussed at home are in fact the first beneficiaries of this awakening to financial education in schools. By offering them the same bases, the school compensates for family inequalities and gives them the keys to true autonomy.
