The Minister of Culture Catherine Pégard judged the reaction of the boss of Canal +, who announced that he would boycott 600 film professionals after an anti-Bolloré column appeared in Libération on May 11, to be “disproportionate”. She calls for “creators to be respected”.

The Minister of Culture Catherine Pégard said on Tuesday that she regretted the “disproportionate” response from the boss of Canal + who declared that he no longer wanted to work with the signatories of an anti-Bolloré forum.

“The major place of this company in the cinema gives it a voice that counts. I regret that the response, disproportionate at the very least, given to the very real concerns which were expressed, arouses them”, said the minister during the government questions session.

It is “the interest of the sector” that depends on it

“I heard the emotion, the concern that is expressed in the cinema sector, as they were expressed in the book sector recently,” she continued, wishing that “reason and dialogue can prevail over threats”. “We absolutely need to first find ways of dialogue,” she demanded, calling for demonstrations “spirit of responsibility” “in the interest of the sector”.

“It is essential that culture is diverse and plural and that creators are respected. Yes, we protect the cultural exception, but my mission and our collective responsibility is first of all to support the challenges and transformations that arise for our model”, she declared before the Assembly, as relayed BFMTV in his live.
