Iran reiterated, Wednesday June 17, its intention to charge ships crossing the Strait of Hormuz, after a period of 60 days without fees provided for by the memorandum of understanding with the United States, the time to negotiate a final text.

The strait “will not return to the pre-war situation”said chief negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf in an interview broadcast late Wednesday evening on state television. “Iran has a right of sovereignty over Hormuz and, of course, we will collect a fee for these services”he added.

According to the text of the memorandum of understanding unveiled by the two parties, the Islamic Republic “will make arrangements, using its best efforts, to ensure the safe passage of commercial vessels free of charge for 60 days only” in the strategic sea route. Its blockade by Tehran, since the start of the war at the end of February, has seriously disrupted the world economy.
