Emmanuel Macron will ask Donald Trump to put more “pressure” on Russia during the G7 summit which opens Monday June 15 in Évian.

“What I really want is to have Americans who say to themselves

‘we are with you, we will continue to help Ukraine, we will put more pressure on Russia’

. “The good negotiation is Ukraine and Russia around the table, but with the Europeans and the Americans who are there,” he added.

The discussions have so far taken place under American mediation, without the Europeans. The United States is, moreover, mainly focused on resolving the conflict that it started in Iran on February 28.

“He is an ally who thought he could quickly end the war in Russia a year and a half ago, who saw the difficulty on our side, who no longer finances the war effort,” recalled the French president, Donald Trump having promised on his return to the White House to resolve the conflict in 24 hours.

“It’s an effort that Europeans are almost exclusively making”, in terms of military support as well as economic aid to Ukraine, he added.

The American president will participate in a session at the G7 summit on Tuesday in the presence of his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky, with whom he has a stormy relationship. The objective of the discussions at the G7 is “that we agree to negotiate, with the Ukrainians”, the conditions under which a peace agreement can be concluded, explained Emmanuel Macron.
