During the 12-day war in the Middle East, the Israeli army confirmed on Friday that they targeted the Arak heavy water nuclear reactor in central Iran. This facility was previously visited in June 2025 by the United States and Israel. According to the Israeli army, the reactor at Arak is a “key site for the production of plutonium for nuclear weapons.” The Iranian media reported American and Israeli strikes on the site just minutes before the Israeli army confirmation.
Arak is a significant site in the Iranian nuclear program and was first revealed in 2002 along with Natanz, causing international concern. The construction of Arak began in the early 2000s to produce plutonium for medical research.
Despite the 2015 Vienna agreement aiming to reconfigure and neutralize the Arak reactor, recent events indicate that Israel continues to target Iranian nuclear facilities. The reactor at Arak, now called Khondab, was planned to be operational by 2026, along with a heavy water production plant on the site.
Other well-known nuclear facilities in Iran include uranium enrichment sites like Natanz and Fordo, the uranium conversion plant in Isfahan, and the Tehran nuclear research center. These sites are regularly inspected by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
Overall, there is ongoing construction of two more reactors in Iran, with Russian assistance, and heightened tensions in the region due to recent military actions targeting nuclear sites.
