On the eve of the G7 summit, multiple clashes between demonstrators and police in Geneva

Clashes took place on Sunday June 14, 2026 between anti-G7 demonstrators to the forces of policenotably around the UN in Geneva in Switzerland, on the eve of the summit in Evian in France.

Small groups of demonstrators, many dressed in black and with their faces masked, threw bottles, stones, pieces of cement and firecrackers in the direction of the police, who responded with tear gas grenades.

Several buildings were also targeted, including those of the auditing firm PricewaterhouseCoopers and the headquarters of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), causing various damage.

According to the police, the windows of the Banque du Léman and Raiffeisen were also damaged.

Environ 20.000 manifestants

Around 7 p.m. (5 p.m. GMT), police estimated the participation at 20,000 demonstrators, including around 600 « Black Bloc »a practice of political protest consisting of grouping together in demonstrations or during actions of civil disobedience in a united, visible and mobile bloc.

The demonstrators did not approach the UN headquarters, which was heavily secured, including two imposing water throwing trucks and a large security system.

From inside the building, AFP journalists heard explosions, numerous police sirens as well as the continuous roar of a helicopter flying over the area.

At the end of the day, remote clashes continued between groups of demonstrators and security forces, in thick clouds of smoke caused by tear gas shots.

« Eat the rich »

The procession, bringing together in the intense heat a colorful crowd of several thousand people behind various slogans anti-capitalists, pro-Palestinian, féministes, proclimat or prokurdestook the start shortly after 3:30 p.m. (1:30 p.m. GMT) on the banks of Lake Geneva.

Shortly after, AFP journalists saw, not far from the procession, a Tesla car in flames, firefighters intervening to put out the fire, the vehicle bearing the inscription « Eat the Rich » (“Eat the rich”).

The first scuffles then broke out near a hotel, while anti-police slogans and chants, including “Bas l’êtat policier”were also heard.

On the sidelines of a G8 summit in Evian, violent groups then provoked riots, looting and clashes with the police in Geneva and Lausanne, causing millions of francs in damage.

The G7 summit takes place from Monday to Wednesday, but most leaders will arrive on Monday via Geneva airport before being transferred to France.
