India appoints new chief of army staff

The Indian government on Saturday named Lieutenant General Dhiraj Seth as the next Chief of Army Staff.

Lt Gen Seth, who is currently serving as Vice Chief of Army Staff, will take charge on June 30, replacing Gen Upendra Dwivedi, who is set to retire on the same day after completing his tenure as the 30th Army Chief. the army, according to government announcements and Indian media.

Hailing from the prestigious armored force, Lieutenant General Seth was commissioned in 1986 and held various operational, command and staff positions during a military career spanning nearly four decades.

Before becoming vice-chief, he headed the army’s Southern Command, then the South-West Command, which notably covers the border areas with Pakistan. He also commanded the XXI Corps, Delhi Zone, an armored brigade as well as a counter-insurgency force in Jammu and Kashmir, according to the Defense Ministry.

General Seth has extensive experience in conventional military operations, counter-insurgency missions and strategic planning. He was also an instructor in several military institutions and participated in a UN peacekeeping mission in Angola in the 1990s.

His appointment comes as India continues to modernize its armed forces and seeks to strengthen its military preparedness in the face of regional security challenges.
