Salvos of American missiles towards Iran. And in Karaj, this Thursday morning, in the suburbs of Tehran, plumes of black smoke rose after the strikes. The United States says it targeted military infrastructure. The Iranian regime responded with fire targeting American bases in Jordan and Kuwait. In Bahrain, debris from an intercepted missile injured at least one person and caused damage.
Despite the ceasefire officially in force, fighting resumed for the second night in a row. Donald Trump even threatens to speed up the pace: “The United States is going to hit Iran very hard tonight”wrote the American president on social networks. A use of force which reflects Donald Trump’s growing impatience. Tired of negotiations that are not moving forward, he chooses to toughen his tone. “They make fun of us, they take us for fools”he said to the press.
For weeks, however, he announced an imminent agreement. The American press has even recorded around forty declarations to this effect. “We are close to sealing what will be a great deal” ; “Maybe in a few days, but it could go very quickly.” ; “Maybe over the weekend.” ; “We are very close to an agreement.” ; “It’s entirely possible that we can find an agreement”a-t-il déclaré tour à tour.
But Iran also has its negotiating levers and threats to completely close the Strait of Hormuz, where certain ships have been able to transit in recent weeks. At the same time, the American army continues to destroy with missiles the engines of oil tankers leaving Iranian ports. On Wednesday June 10, three Indian sailors were killed in one of these strikes.
So, is the trap of a new escalation closing in on Donald Trump? The opposition denounces what it considers to be a total absence of strategy. “The president is increasing his threats and boasting. That doesn’t make America any safer. And that still doesn’t explain to the Americans why he started this conflict.”for example lamented Wes Moore, (Democratic) governor of Maryland.
Barely a few minutes ago, Donald Trump finally announced that he would cancel the strikes planned for this evening and mentioned discussions at the highest level with the Iranian regime. A last minute turnaround which the American president is accustomed to and which in no way guarantees a resolution of the conflict.
