Important directives from the Secretary-General and the President regarding the implementation of foreign policy.

Speaking at the Conference on the Implementation of Politburo Resolution No. 06-NQ/TW on Foreign Policy of the 14th Party Congress, General Secretary and President To Lam said the resolution was aimed to concretize the orientations of the foreign policy of the XIVth Congress around five major ideological axes: first, foreign policy is, for the first time, recognized as a “crucial and regular” mission in same as national defense and security; secondly, in this new era, foreign policy is not only an instrument for protecting national and ethnic interests, but also a means of demonstrating character, identity and prestige of Vietnam on the international stage, to disseminate the values of Vietnamese civilization and to arouse respect, trust and influence within the international community; thirdly, foreign policy must be based on the principles of “strategic autonomy” and “self-sufficiency”; fourth, foreign policy must assume a new mission, that of guaranteeing the highest national interests, taking as its foundations peace, independence, autonomy and self-sufficiency, placing the people at the center of all policies; responsibility; fifth, comprehensive foreign policy is the enterprise of the entire Party and the entire people…
