The American ambassador to the EU, Andrew Puzder, deplored on Friday the European Union’s efforts to reduce its technological dependence on American digital giants, calling on it to choose the right side in “the AI war with China”.

“I worry when Europe seeks to decouple itself from the United States on these technological issues,” underlined the diplomat, when asked about Brussels’ proposals aimed at

reserve certain digital service contracts for European providers

in the name of “technological sovereignty”.

“I think we are in an AI war with China, and it is important for Western civilization that the United States wins,” he argued during a conference in Brussels.

Stay “partners”

Europe must choose

“between a free market democracy and totalitarian, communist mercantilists using economic coercion”

he argued.

“It is important that Europe and the United States remain partners,” added the ambassador, stressing that if America were to “lose this fight”, China would emerge strengthened, to the detriment of the Europeans.

According to proposals presented on Wednesday by Brussels, EU countries will have to require suppliers of AI and remote computing services (Cloud), for public contracts, guarantees in terms of sovereignty.

If these requirements are implemented, contracts in the most sensitive activities (such as security and defense) should be

reserved for European groups, especially to the detriment of American service providers

(like Google, Amazon and Microsoft), which currently dominate the digital services market in Europe.
