Searches containing the word “ Japan » on Catawiki increased by more than 400% between January and April 2026 compared to the same period the previous year. This trend is driven by pop culture nostalgia, the reputation for Japanese know-how and easier access to Japanese sellers who are stimulating a new wave of collectors.
At the heart of this trend is a true cultural crossover. Millennials who grew up hoarding Pokémon cards and watching anime have now become knowledgeable collectors; while a younger generation – introduced to works like One Piece or Studio Ghibli films via streaming platforms and YouTube – discovering this market for the first time. However, it is not just a fan-related phenomenon. Japanese culture has established itself in European daily life, with an influence visible as much in the matcha on the café menu as in manga festivals, whiskey bars, interior decoration and even fashion.
