The season began with theater this Friday, May 22, in the museum courtyard. A remarkable bilingual adaptation of the novel Murtorius, fruit of a creative residency granted by the city to director Pierre Savalli and his troupe. But this is only the first meeting of the seven in the off-site programming of the Bastia theater, between now and the beginning of July.

Why outside the walls? Because despite the closure of the municipal theater due to work, in October 2023, the municipality strives to maintain cultural programming in the city center, by investing in public places. “The objective is certainly to maintain a cultural offer, but not only, entrust Mattea Lacave, deputy mayor in charge of culture. It is also a desire that we had, to honor our remarkable heritage sites.”

Gypsy sounds and funk rhythms

The calendar for this off-site offering is organized around three locations. In addition to the representation of Mortarthe museum courtyard will host three shows. This Friday, May 29, the Debussy quartet, in which the great French violinist Sarah Nemtanu officiates, will give a concert entitled “Gypsy Music”* during which the great composers who have explored Gypsy sounds will be honored: Brahms, Dvořák, Bartok.

On June 25, the Bastia museum will host a new theatrical performance, with I review thema classic of Russian theater of which the Teatrinu troupe will offer an adaptation in Corsican.

On July 8, the museum courtyard will finally serve as a stage for the contemporary dance company Art Mouv’, which will highlight disco and funk music in a show entitled “Soul Train in Bastia”.

“Quality shows which retain a popular character”

Another place with “heritage” value selected for this off-the-wall program: the Spaziu Mantinum. This balcony-shaped stage space on the Old Port will host two musical events. The first will take place on May 31 and will be dedicated to the composer Jacques Offenbach. The lyrical artists Julia Knecht, Charles Mesrine and Jean-Christophe Keck, accompanied by the piano of Diego Mingolla, will cover the greatest tunes of the author of La Belle Hélene, before playing and singing Lischen and Fritzchenan operetta in one act by the master.

On Saturday June 20, singer Julia Knecht will return to the Mantinum stage, this time accompanied by harpist Elise Lancerotto, for “Arpa sott’à e stelle”, a singing-harp show based around great film scores, the world of musicals and famous Italian tunes. “The idea is to offer quality shows which retain a popular character, explains Frédérique Balbinot, director of the Bastia theater and responsible for off-site programming. This is part of the democratization role that we are trying to fulfill.”
