Bébel shines at the French Cinematheque: Jean-Paul Belmondo is in the spotlight in a major exhibition presented from October 7, 2026 to January 31, 2027.

His career made him an international star, an emblematic figure of 20th century French cinema. Jean-Paul Belmondo is at the heart of a major retrospective exhibition, presented at the Cinémathique française from October 7, 2026 to January 31, 2027. The exhibition Belmondo, the magnificent brings together extracts from his films, posters and photographs which illustrate the prolific career of this actor with inimitable cheekiness.

Jean-Paul Belmondo was born in 1933, in Neuilly-sur-Seine, into a family of artists. An undisciplined student but an accomplished sportsman, he found his passion in theater as a teenager. At the National Conservatory of Dramatic Art, he met Jean Rochefort, Jean-Pierre Marielle, Guy Bedos, Bruno Cremer, Pierre Vernier… After a few roles in theater and cinema, he enjoyed great success in Out of breathfilm by Jean-Luc Godard. He then made a series of films, sharing the bill with great stars of his time, such as Jean Gabin, Lino Ventura, Catherine Deneuve…

In all, Jean-Paul Belmondo has appeared in more than 80 films. He was the virile heroesoften mocking and fiery, or a dark anti-hero. He often preferred to perform his own stuntspushing his limits as an artist and athlete. Some of his films have become classics of French cinema, such as The Magnificent, The Man from Rio, Fear in the City, Ace of Aces… Jean-Paul Belmondo also received numerous récompenses, confirming its popularity in France and internationally.

The Cinémathique française therefore wishes to highlight this essential figure of the cinema françaisin a retrospective exhibition to be seen in fall 2026.
